How to Build an Authority Site

By | December 24, 2016

When it comes to building an authority site there are tons of misconceptions out there on this very topic.  No matter what you have already read about the subject or might see in the future, what you need to know about it is that this is something you can do on your own and I’m going to show you a very straight forward method to make one.

What is an authority site?

An authority site is basically any blog/website that has been around for a long time, has some good quality content that gets some traffic, has user engagement usually in the form of comments, and has some prestige throughout the different search engines.  Websites with high authority get a lot of traffic and tend to rank higher rather quickly on search engines.

So how do you create a website with authority?

So building a site with authority basically comes down to three steps:

Step 1: Create a niche/subject focused website. (Do not go broad!)

Step 2: Create great content with high relevance that contains proper keyword usage.

Step 3: You must continue to add new content to your site several times throughout the week!

Here’s an example putting these three steps to use…

Step 1 Example: Create a niche/subject focused website.

The first important thing you should do is pick a name for your website that clearly identifies what your site is about.  For example, this site’s name clearly tells visitors that this website has to do with success and money.

I suppose even before that, though, you need have some idea what your subject or niche is going to be.  Figuring this out can be one of the most difficult things for a new blogger or online entrepreneur because this will determine the path this website will be on for the rest of its existence.

That’s why I always recommend going with something you are very interested in.  Almost always having a subject that you are interested in will ensure you have a lot of ideas to create content for and also that you have less burnout.

While we are on the subject of setting up your website, if you are unfamiliar with the process or maybe are just interested in an easy way to go about it I recommend reading this tutorial.  I show you the method I personally use to set mine up which takes about a minute or less (I even include a video for those of you that are more visual!)

Step 2 Example: Create great content with high relevance that contains proper keyword usage.

When we talk about content we are talking about pretty much anything and everything you add to your site.  Great content is content that can be beneficial to your visitors but also benefits you!

Great content can start a chain reaction resulting in higher rankings, which will lead to an increase in traffic, and that increase in traffic will lead to higher authority.  So the takeaway here is that with better quality content you can expect better rankings for your website.

As for keyword usage, the best form of traffic you can hope for is organic traffic which comes from people typing certain keyword phrases into a search engine and clicking on search results.  You want to write your content to address the questions people are looking for answers to that have to do with your niche.

Let’s say you have a website that focuses on gardening you could focus on content answering questions like:

  • What is square foot gardening?
  • How to have a garden while living in an apartment?
  • When to start planting in my state?
  • How do I tell if I am overwatering?

Those are just a few ideas for probably some very common gardening questions that people search for in a search engine that could be capitalized on to bring in some nice organic traffic!  If you have any questions about keywords, here’s a tutorial article that goes over keywords in detail.

One thing to keep in mind is that while keywords are important, they are not nearly as important as writing great content.  Every post or article you write is full of keywords that will go into search engines and come through in search results, but they may not ever be seen if they aren’t ranked high enough due to poor quality content.

Step 3 Example: You must continue to add new content to your site several times throughout the week!

If possible, you want to be working on adding new content to your site several times each week.  As stated before, make sure that the content you are posting is relevant to your chosen subject.

You might find that after a while you will hit a creative brick wall and have problems coming up with things to write about.  That’s ok, it happens to everyone throughout their content creation careers.  There are a few things you can do to help with this issue which I talk about in this article, but the main thing is to just keep working at it whenever you can.

You may find that sometimes an idea you have for content is actually a little broad and can be broken down into segments.  These segments might then be able to provide you with a week or more of content topics that you can get really detailed with.  If you would have just stuck with the original I idea you probably would have glossed over a lot of these other possible content ideas just so your article didn’t get massive.

Doing this kind of analysis on any content ideas is great for keeping the content machine moving!  You will find that you almost always break out at least one other sub-topic to work with.

Site authority comes from content, content, CONTENT!!!

See a theme forming here?  Keep adding content!

Why, you ask?  It’s simple actually!  The more content you add the more opportunities your site has to appear in search engine results.  The more times your site shows up in these results (this is known as impressions) the more traffic you will end up getting.  The more traffic you get will earn you some amount of trust with those search engines in the form of website authority!

You can kind of think of website authority as currency that you can use to compete.  As you accumulate more authority currency you are able to compete other high rollers (high authority) websites related to your chosen subject.

So no matter what anyone else tries to tell you, or what else you might have heard, content IS the way you build an authority site!

THIS is how you build an authority blog. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Don’t pay any attention to information out there telling you to use backlinking services or any other artificial methods that try to increase your site’s authority.  Search engines are becoming too smart for a lot of these tricks and they just don’t work anymore.  A lot of these forms of increasing authority are known as Black Hat SEO techniques, which you can read about here.  There can be serious consequences with Google and other search engines for using these methods, so please don’t do it!

There will never be an issue as far as search engines are concerned with coming up with great content, and it will always remain the #1 way to increase site authority.

So the best part of having high site authority is that you can really start to pursue your overall goal of monetizing your website.  For guidance on how to prepare yourself for this step and pretty much any other aspect of running a successful website/blog, I strongly recommend checking this place out.  It is a gold mine of information, training, and tools!

Content, quality content is the most crucial thing. Unfortunately, some people are constantly looking for shortcuts or try to convince their selves otherwise.

Google loves site that is frequently updated, if you keep your promise and update your site regularly, Google will trust your site,

Thanks for sharing this awesome post and have a great day! 🙂

Hey, Anis. Thanks for stopping by!

I completely agree with what you are saying. The thing about online business and marketing is that shortcuts rarely, if ever, work. When people do find a loophole it usually doesn’t last very long since search engines are constantly adapting.

I have started lately to work on my new website. I was thinking that it would be boring but now I want to write a new post every day. Writing for you own website is a great and creative work. Thanks for sharing.

Hey, Ilias. It’s great to have you here and it’s really great that you have a new website!

I think that posting is just something that grows on most people. I mean, there are some people out there that just really enjoy writing stuff but I think most start out feeling the same as you expressed and then as they become more comfortable with things start to really enjoy it.

Getting your website to the “authority” level -meaning that you have lots of quality content, traffic and rankings, doesn’t come easily. But if you pick a topic that you love writing about, somehow it just seems to come!

    1. Christian Dorius Post author

      Hello, Emma!

I completely agree with you. There is no easy way to get high authority other than time and work. With those two things as long as you are posting relative, quality content then, as you state, it will just organically and automatically happen.

When I create a niche focused website, do you think is there a way to estimate the revenue potential?

    1. Christian Dorius Post author

      Hello, Furkan.

It really depends on what your niche is. With things like MLM or affiliate marketing, in most cases, your potential revenue is unlimited as sales and revenue are compounding. Now with physical and services you can start to figure out your actual revenue potential.

For example, with a service you can figure how much time it takes you to perform that service and the maximum amount of clients/customers you could handle given that time frame. Multiply that by the cost of your service and you can figure out a basic estimate for potential revenue. With physical products it is pretty much the same thing, but you would take how many products you have or can produce and multiply that by the cost.

If you wanted to get more detailed you could then start taking out all the costs of business to find your true revenue. But to answer your question, yes you can. 🙂

Hi Christian! Gone are the days when scammy sites and trash content proliferated the internet. Since Google’s latest updates, internet marketers are beginning to realize that relevant and quality content is today the way to go if they want to make good business online.

I really like this turn of events as this can only mean good things. Online audiences now have the chance to read great content which can really help them resolve their issues. You hit it spot on there – content is still king.

Hey, Kathy. I really appreciate you stopping by and giving us your input!

I agree with you that this can only mean good things, mostly because if the readers start to expect and receive good quality content I think you will start to see less people just coming to your website only to leave after a few seconds. Those visitors will be coming to your site expecting great quality content to help them solve whatever their problem might be and in turn will take the time to actually absorb and interact with the material you offer them.

Love the article and your emphasis on content creation. The only way to success is to provide value in the market, and the way to do that in this situation is through your content. Very well written article! Thank you!

  7. Kameron Porter

I found this all to be very informative. I am just getting into online marketing myself, and this was encouraging to read.

    Thank You.

Also, if it’s not too much trouble, do you have any advice about having multiple affiliate links within one website for similar products? Is this a bad idea?

I stand behind more than one brand that is willing to pay me commission to line up sales, and some of those brands overlap on certain products I’d like to promote.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Christian Dorius Post author

Hi, Kameron. Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you found this article informative!

As far as having multiple affiliate links, sure you can do this if you want. You will want to make sure you are doing some sort of review on those products or services you are linking to. Don’t just throw ads containing your link up all over your website. Also, want to make sure you aren’t overdoing it with how many options you are offering and where you are placing those links. This can have a negative effect and turn away visitors.

If you feel pretty confident in a product you are promoting and want to share that product with other people, by all means, do so!

    Hi Christian,

Really enjoyed reading your article. Been in the industry for a while, but it was great to get some confirmations that most of my principle strategies are proven and tested by third parties.
Sounds like a cliche, but keep up the good work, I am sure that you are providing valuable content for newbies and peace of mind for more experienced.
