How To Create Effective Content For A Website

By | January 12, 2017

It is pretty well known throughout the blogging community content is king and you may have even heard that phrase yourself.  While this is true and content is king in terms of SOE and rankings it is important to recognize that this phrase is incomplete.  It should read “Quality Content Is King”.

In this article, I’m going to help you understand the difference between just regular content and quality content.  By the end of the article, you should have a firm understanding of how to create effective content for a website.

Throughout this post, I use the terms quality content and effective content interchangeably.  This is because they are essentially one and the same.  Quality content is effective content because it results in content that improves the success of your blog or business.

Why Is Effective Content So Important?

The biggest reason, which is the reason you want to most concerned with, is that writing quality content will increase your website’s authority within Google.  Nowadays Google values your quality content above anything else and if you deliver that content they will reward your hard work with higher rankings.

Higher rankings lead to more impressions, which leads to more traffic/visitors, which in the end leads to more overall success!

Old ways of doing things to boost your SOE are fading at a rapid pace.  Methods that people used to use, like backlinking, using article spinners, creating exact match domains and using other Black Hat SOE methods no longer work.

This is because the search engines themselves are constantly evolving and are not only detecting these older methods but for some of those methods, they are also penalizing those that implement them.

If some blogger out there decides to write garbage articles or use some cheap tactic to draw in visitors, should that blogger be ranked higher than another blogger that writes effective content and actually helps their visitors?  No, of course, they shouldn’t!

Google also realizes that this isn’t right and because they have a reputation to maintain they do whatever they can to improve their engines and weed out the trash.

After all, if all the top listings on Google were websites that were just trying to sell items and weren’t offering any sort of helpful information then they would really begin to lose trust with web users.  That is exactly why quality content is so important.

How Do I Write Effective Content?

In order to write effective content, you need to understand that this level of content involves writing for your visitors, not just writing purely to try and sell something or get a jump in the search engine rankings.  You must provide information that is helpful and valuable for your visitors.

When you begin to write your articles it is good practice to:

  • Think about the people reading your articles.
  • Try putting yourself in your visitor’s shoes in order to better see your posts through their eyes.
  • Write your posts like a real verbal communication between two people.  You need to connect with your readers, so write what your feeling and write naturally.
  • Don’t shove products or services down their throats.  Your visitors will pick up on this, become annoyed, and leave your website.
  • Try and write engaging articles.
  • Write about things that are controversial or debatable.  This goes along with being engaging, so don’t be afraid to include your opinions in order to create conversation.
  • Make sure you write with emotion.  You can be helpful along with being funny if the opportunity presents itself.

While these suggestions might seem simple and common knowledge, they can take a long time to put into practice and hopefully someday master.  I know it took me a long time to feel natural in my writing.  But learning to do these things is very important because they all accomplish the most important part of your website which is building trust with your readers.

With effective writing, your opinions and your advice will create returning visitors.  It will also help you build those engaging articles which will lead to people leaving you comments on those articles.  You’ll find that some of the visitors actually take your advice and start to view you as an authority in whatever subject your website is about.

One thing to remember, though, is that not everyone that comes to your site will agree with those opinions of yours.  Hey, that’s ok!  They still contribute to your post with their comment and their opinion might cause others to engage that normally wouldn’t have.  Sometimes you just have to roll with it.

Quick Review And A Few Tips

I can not emphasize enough that you write for your audience and not for the search engines.  I’m not saying that you won’t be including anything to help better your standing with the search engines, such as keyword research and utilization.  I did it in this post and that is completely expected!

Even while doing those sort of mandatory things your main goal for each post should always to help people and provide them with valuable information.  After all, that is exactly what you should expect from effective content, right?

Think of it this way.  If you were to try to get your post to rank with a keyword that people are commonly searching for, your main goal would still actually be to give them information that they found helpful.  This would keep those visitors coming back to your site, sharing your posts, and contributing through comments.

The best way to accomplish any of this is to write about things that your visitors will enjoy reading, which is always done by writing what you are thinking with feeling.  By doing this, your result will be:

  • Visitors spending more time on your site, which tells Google that you are writing articles that the public feels are worth reading.
  • Having your visitors sharing and commenting on your articles, which tells Google that you are writing articles that are engaging.  Google really like this!
  • Lower bounce rates, which tells Google that your visitors actually want to stay on your website.

Effective content creates happy visitors and Google puts this at the highest level when it comes to ranking.  So by using some of the suggestions I have listed above you should be able to make your visitors happy and in turn create more success for yourself because you know how to write effective content.

Hi, Tamara. Thanks for joining us here and adding to the conversation!

I agree with you. I remember when I first started blogging, which was on a different website, I thought it was something which all I needed to do was write up some articles every once in a while. I thought doing just that and people would magically show up and read my posts. Boy was I way off! 🙂
